Forget the PS5: the Xbox Series X will be the real star of backward compatibility

The PS5 will not ultimately be the champion of consoles for backward compatibility. Microsoft announces that all Xbox One games and all games backward compatible with the current iteration will also be with the Xbox Series X.

Tense smiles, empty room, your monotone and overdose of very technical details ... the presentation of the characteristics of the PS5 by Mark Cerny, the chief system architect at Sony, has both taught us a lot about aspects useful to developers and not much on the side of what the console will really be for players.

With one exception, and that wasn’t really good news. While for weeks there seemed to be widespread backward compatibility with PS1 games, we learned instead that "almost" all of the most popular PS4 games would be compatible with the launch of PS5. Without mentioning previous generations.

Backward compatibility: Microsoft persists and signs
If it is still too early to draw conclusions about the proportion of games actually available at launch, this is, from the start, a very big disappointment. Who could end up playing Microsoft's advantage. It is that there is still a constant at the Redmond firm: its speech on the backward compatibility of the Xbox Series X. In a blog post dated March 16, the firm repeats that its console will be compatible with "des thousands of Xbox One games but also Xbox 360 games and original Xbox games. ”

And to add that these games "will play even better on Xbox Series X". Microsoft also did not promise full backward compatibility, since at no time did the company use this term. But at least seemed to be making an effort to keep not only many popular titles up to the first generation playable on the Xbox Series X - the focus was not only on compatibility with the immediately newest iteration.

However, a new twist: as if to respond to the mole of the apparent efforts of backward compatibility of Sony, Microsoft announced yesterday on the official Xbox account that "all the games which are already backward compatible" with the current generation will be with the Xbox Series X "plus all Xbox One games," adds Microsoft. It is therefore now official: the PS5 will be much less backward compatible than the Xbox Series X. The score is therefore for the moment 2-0 for Microsoft if we add the fact that the Xbox Series X will be more powerful in raw power than the PS5, in any case until the next meeting!
